The transformation of the former CPR Arbutus Rail Corridor into a new temporary pedestrian and cycling greenway is well underway. As the Director of Transportation Lon LaClaire described to Marpole BIA members at the AGM in September 2016, the temporary pathway would be close to completion in spring 2017. At the same time, the City’s Arbutus Greenway Project office has been hosting open houses and conducting surveys on what residents want from a permanent pathway. The permanent greenway is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2019. Highlights of public consultation include:
- Provide a high-quality, accessible public space for walking and cycling.
- Create a safe, comfortable, and welcoming destination with places for gathering, socializing, and relaxing.
- Connect to neighbourhoods, parks, and other points of interest along the greenway, as well as the broader transportation network.
- Keep green spaces: places for tranquility, to reconnect with nature, to grow food, and nurture ecosystems and biodiversity.
The Greenway project team will use what it heard to develop a vision for the future Arbutus Greenway, which will guide the design process over the coming months.
The Marpole BIA is very excited about the connections to the Greenway within Marpole, and to other neighbourhoods such as Kits, Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy.
