Marpole branch library expansion update

Published: March 2, 2026

The Marpole Branch Library on Granville Street is beginning its anticipated renovation project this month.

Starting March 10th, the branch will be closed for eight (8) weeks until May 5th. This closure allows for the removal of a wall and materials so work crews can begin construction of new washrooms and renovate the former Salvation Army Thrift Store space.

Renovation Details

The size of the existing Marpole Branch Library will be temporarily smaller after May 5th. But the most in-demand services, like computers, info service, children’s library, and some seating areas will remain for patrons. There will be a 30 minute max time on the computers during this time to allow for turnover for more patrons.

A second closure is planned for fall 2026, likely around November. This will involve a longer closure period of approximately 3-4 months. The Library is currently looking at alternate locations in the Marpole neighbourhood to provide some Library services during this time.

It is hoped that the fully renovated Marpole branch Library will reopen by March 2027.

The VPL is also working with Musqueam on including First Nations artwork in the interior of the new Library, as well as designing a new mural for the south-facing exterior of the renovated Marpole Library. This will complement existing public art and murals in Marpole, including the Coast Salish Mermaid mural on the north-facing wall of the BMO at West 67th Avenue.
